The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is set to be a cultural and technological milestone in the gaming world. There are millions of fans worldwide eager to download and play the newest version of GTA. The current confirmed date is very helpfully “Fall 2025”.
Why should you care if you are not a “gamer”? Internet traffic is expected to surge dramatically on the day that this game is officially released and for several days after. Potentially, this will affect internet speeds globally, particularly affecting businesses that depend on solid internet connectivity (most businesses these days).
In reality, there are many events that can affect internet access, and this article considers the impact of overwhelmed network infrastructures, slowdowns in cloud-based services and e-commerce platforms, and the ripple effects of such a high-profile events far beyond the gaming community.
For law firms, especially those relying on remote operations, cloud based software, internet banking and other internet-based tools, understanding and preparing for these disruptions is crucial to maintaining productivity and client satisfaction.
Severe Network Overload
With the immense file size of GTA 6 (rumoured to be between 80GB and 200GB) and millions of simultaneous downloads ISP networks could easily become overwhelmed. There is a very real likelihood of widespread slowdowns and outages that disrupt business operations.
With more people subscribing to servicers on or across the internet, the pull on pooled resources becomes a very real challenge.
Reduced Internet Speeds for Non-Gamers
As there will be increased gaming-related traffic, people and businesses will undoubtedly receive throttled internet speeds, worryingly where you are relying upon stable connections for critical operations e.g. banking and financial transactions.
It should be noted that the vast majority of people working from home connect to their workplace on “commodity” consumer Internet connections. These connections are designed for basic home usage, if you look at the contract the SLA’s and guarantees are extremely poor. During the COVID lockdowns many struggled with the type of network capacity issues highlighted earlier. Often, we hear of people in some areas complaining of the “3:30 slowdown” as school children come on line impacting their connection experience.
Interruptions in Cloud-Based Services
Cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure and AWS will not avoid these issues and may experience delays or downtime due to heightened data traffic, hindering productivity for businesses dependent on these services.
The issue here is not so much the platforms themselves but the routes needed to pass information between the users of the systems and the hosting.
Digital/Virtual Meetings
With the digital meeting place now being part of the everyday lives of many, firms using tools like Zoom or Teams may face degraded performance, dropped calls, and delayed file sharing, particularly in areas with shared bandwidth.
How would your firm cope if Teams crashed completely for a week?
Digital Telephony
Many firms have moved away from onsite phone systems and fixed land lines. Now we have the digital phone system that operates via the same type of (and sometimes shared with) lines that are used for internet connectivity. This has the potential to cause degraded quality and clarity of calls, calls not connecting or ringing and also dropping mid call losing the conversations that could be critical to cases.
Online Banking
We have already had internet activity affect banking, with e-commerce systems failing on the shop floor and access to online banking being unavailable or slow at times. Obviously, this is fundamental to our ability to trade.
Data Migrations and System Upgrades
A critical part of any data migration or system upgrade is the ability to maintain a continual stable connection between source and destination. Any interruption could cause either the corruption of data or the corruption of upgrade installation. Planning around the release date of GTA6 (or any other predicted issue on the internet) may be crucial in the effectiveness of upcoming projects for firms along with their third party suppliers and contractors. Avoiding the release period may allow for a much more effective project to conclude without delay or disruption. Do you have any major projects planned that clash with the release date?
What are the knock on effects for the business?
Businesses are consistently investing in better connectivity with more bandwidth, but perhaps are unaware of the natural bottleneck of the internet itself, and the lack of control that we have over this. Whilst the cost of services and support rises, firms should be considering whether these improvements are an attempt to achieve something that is beyond their control
However, ensuring that you have a robust infrastructure will ensure that you can demonstrate to your client that you have done all that you can. If you are then affected by national or global issues beyond your control, you will be one of many that are affected, and clients are likely to be aware and to understand.
Disaster planning will become a key part of the overall business plan. There is a very real possibility that, for whatever reason, prolonged network outages affecting wide regions, could result in complete operational blackouts for businesses that rely heavily on continuous internet access. How would your business cope, what plans do you have to continue to trade for a period, in such circumstances?
Conclusion
Thankfully these widely anticipated big game releases such as GTA6 do not occur every week or month. The date has not officially been released yet, and the game has already been pushed back several times, but it will be released and you should start to think now about what measures you can put in place should this create the predicted storm on the internet. More importantly, this is a good point at which to start thinking about the impact of internet issues generally.
Just a bit of non-IT related business advice… with the release of GTA6, holiday requests are expected to peak but at least staff won’t be all be rushing to use up their holiday at the end of the holiday year! Silver linings!
