Modern Excel for Professional Services: 5 Functions Changing How We Work
Excel underpins daily operations in legal firms.
It supports billing analysis, WIP reviews, forecasting and partner reporting. Yet many teams still rely on legacy formulas and manual fixes that introduce risk.
Excel has moved on. Modern functions deliver stronger accuracy, clearer structure and better auditability. When used well, they improve control and confidence.
This series explores five functions that are reshaping how legal teams manage data. Each episode explains what the function does, why it matters and how it applies in practice.
Next, we turn to LET, the most underrated Excel function.
Your formulas are too long… LET fixes that.
In many law firms, Excel models grow over time. A simple billing calculation becomes a longer formula. Then another condition is added. Then VAT. Then adjustments for write-offs or discounts.
Before long, the formula is difficult to read, difficult to review, and difficult to audit.
That’s where LET comes in. The LET function allows you to assign variables inside a formula so calculations can be reused without repeating them.
LET Syntax
Excel’s LET Function syntax uses name and value pairs, then a calculation:
Define variables in name/value pairs; the final argument performs a calculation using them.
Example:
In this example:
- x represents the calculation A2*B2
- Excel stores that result
- The formula then uses x in the final calculation
This keeps formulas shorter, clearer, and more efficient.
Why this matters in a legal environment
Legal finance and operations teams often work with spreadsheets that include:
- Fee calculations
- Realisation and recovery rates
- WIP adjustments
- Partner profitability reports
When formulas become complex, errors become harder to detect.
Using LET helps by:
✔ Making formulas easier to read and review
✔ Reducing repeated calculations
✔ Improving spreadsheet performance
✔ Supporting stronger auditability of financial models
Practical uses in law firms
- Matter profitability models
- Partner performance reporting
- Billing and VAT calculations
- Financial forecasting models
Small improvements in spreadsheet design can significantly improve confidence in financial reporting.
At Baskerville Drummond LLP, we regularly see how better spreadsheet discipline strengthens operational oversight across legal practices.
