Nelsons – Acquisition Strategic Support
Project type: Acquisition Strategic Support
Baskerville Drummond supported Nelsons’ in-house IT team through the acquisition and integration of a local law firm.
Combining acquisition advice with hands-on project management and data conversion, we helped Nelsons bring the acquired firm into its existing practice management environment, reduce ongoing licensing costs and enable transferring staff to work within Nelsons’ systems from day one.

The Challenge
Acquiring a law firm involves bringing together people, processes and technology. For Nelsons, a key part of this was moving live data from the acquired firm’s practice management system into its own environment.
The integration came at a busy time for Nelsons’ in-house IT team. The firm needed additional support with the specific technology challenges of an acquisition, alongside someone to take responsibility for planning and delivering the data conversion.
A successful transition would allow incoming colleagues to work within Nelsons’ existing environment, avoiding the need to continue operating and licensing a separate practice management system.
About Nelsons
Founded in 1983, Nelsons has offices in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. The firm advises businesses, individuals and families on legal and investment matters, and has grown through both organic development and acquisitions across the East Midlands.
The Solution
Baskerville Drummond worked alongside Nelsons’ IT team, drawing on its experience of law firm acquisitions and system integration to provide advice and practical assistance.
Having worked together previously, the teams already had an established relationship. This helped Matthew work closely with Nelsons’ colleagues and maintain clear communication throughout the project.
Our role combined acquisition-specific guidance with responsibility for the planning, project management and execution of the live data conversion. This gave Nelsons additional expertise and delivery capacity at a time when its internal team was managing the demands of the acquisition.
The work focused on bringing the acquired firm’s live data into Nelsons’ existing practice management environment, supporting the transition to a shared system.
The Outcome
The conversion removed the need to run two practice management systems alongside each other. Nelsons reduced its ongoing PMS licensing costs, while transferring staff could move into their new working environment from day one.
Bringing live data into the existing system also meant Nelsons could incorporate the acquired firm within its established technology environment, rather than retaining a separate system to support its ongoing work.
The project demonstrates how specialist acquisition support can complement an in-house IT team, providing both advice and the capacity to deliver a defined part of the integration.
“Matthew worked seamlessly with our team and communication was good”
